The first of these was to find a method of personal development. We looked at this in terms of not only meditation but a radical reorientation of our lives. In this retreat we will look more deeply at this by way of unpacking the <em>Dasadhamma Sutta<\/em>, a text from the Pali Canon, the oldest set of Buddhist texts.<\/p>\n<p>This sutta explains ten things we should reflect upon, again and again, in our spiritual life. The term used in the sutta is the Pali term Pabbajja, generally translated as Going Forth. In the early texts this was understood to mean leaving the life of a householder and living as a monk or nun, as a forest dweller. Most of us who consider ourselves to be leading a life informed by Buddhist values are not in a position to do this. So, does this still have relevance in our lives? I think so.<\/p>\n<p>The path of a dharma-farer &#8211; one who lives according to Buddhist values &#8211; is, in my understanding, a radical path. Although we might not turn our back on home, family, career we do make significant changes in our attitude towards these and in how we live our lives in all the contexts we inhabit. Our ethical practice becomes more sensitive. We are more driven by love and compassion and we value life more as we understand the interconnected nature of all beings.<\/p>\n<p>This sutta, speaking to us from the times of the Buddha himself, gives us pointers and hints in how we might live a life more in harmony with our values. Emptiness does not exist separately from form; form does not exist separately from emptiness, That which is form is emptiness; that which is emptiness is form. Likewise: feeling, determinative perception, volition and consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>In these [skandhas], Shariputra, all phenomena (dharmas) are characterised by emptiness. They are not arisen, not ceased; not stained, not stainless; not deficient, not complete.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Shariputra, in emptiness, form does not exist, nor feeling, nor determinative perception, nor volition, nor consciousness. There is no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind. No form, sound, smell, taste, touchable, or mental object. No eye-element, up to and including no mind-consciousness element. No ignorance, no destruction of ignorance, up to and including no old age-and-death, no destruction of old age-and-death. No suffering, no cause, no cessation, no path. No Knowledge. No attainment, no non-attainment.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Shariputra, because Bodhisattvas have no attainment, they rely on the perfection of wisdom and dwell without mind-obscurations. Because their minds are without obscurations, they are unafraid. Going beyond confused views, they attain complete nirvana.<\/p>\n<p>All Buddhas of the three times, relying on the perfection of wisdom, are fully awakened to the utmost, perfect awakening.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, one should know the perfection of wisdom to be the great mantra, the mantra of great knowledge, the unsurpassed mantra, the most unequalled mantra, the mantra that calms all suffering; one should know it to be real because it is not false. Emptiness does not exist separately from form; form does not exist separately from emptiness, That which is form is emptiness; that which is emptiness is form. Likewise: feeling, determinative perception, volition and consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>In these [skandhas], Shariputra, all phenomena (dharmas) are characterised by emptiness. They are not arisen, not ceased; not stained, not stainless; not deficient, not complete.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Shariputra, in emptiness, form does not exist, nor feeling, nor determinative perception, nor volition, nor consciousness. There is no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind. No form, sound, smell, taste, touchable, or mental object. No eye-element, up to and including no mind-consciousness element. No ignorance, no destruction of ignorance, up to and including no old age-and-death, no destruction of old age-and-death. No suffering, no cause, no cessation, no path. No Knowledge. No attainment, no non-attainment.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Shariputra, because Bodhisattvas have no attainment, they rely on the perfection of wisdom and dwell without mind-obscurations. Because their minds are without obscurations, they are unafraid. Going beyond confused views, they attain complete nirvana.<\/p>\n<p>All Buddhas of the three times, relying on the perfection of wisdom, are fully awakened to the utmost, perfect awakening.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, one should know the perfection of wisdom to be the great mantra, the mantra of great knowledge, the unsurpassed mantra, the most unequalled mantra, the mantra that calms all suffering; one should know it to be real because it is not false. First connecting with the heart centre and opening to compassion. Then moving into a kindly awareness of sensations in the energy centres and the whole body.<\/p>\n<p>We are encouraged to sit in the open ocean of awareness and notice the rise and fall of experience, the <em>shunya<\/em> nature of all experience, including any arising <em>kleshas<\/em>.
