Giving to Bhante

We all owe the gift of our ordination, and perhaps our very lives, to Bhante Sangharakshita. For more than fifty years he has poured his life’s energy into creating our Order and movement. Even now, at 93, and with his body increasingly frail, he does everything he can to support us in our work for the Dharma. Visitors to Adhisthana feel the inspirational force of his presence – and of course one doesn’t need to be at Adhisthana to feel this.

Uddiyana is the Trust which raises the funds to support Bhante and his care team. As he grows older he has reached the point where he needs full time care, which at some point may be the equivalent of what would be provided in a nursing home. Bhante has a team around him. ‘Carer’ doesn’t seem altogether the right word. His team are some of his friends. Paramartha and Suvajra, together with Sthanashraddha, Sanghadasa and myself, with ongoing help also from Ashvajit, provide companionship, care and secretarial help and are on hand for him twenty-four hours a day. In the last few years most of the team have been doing what they do without financial cost or for just board and lodging. At present we support two people full-time, Sanghadasa and Sthanashraddha and the rest of us help out with board and lodging provided, or for partial financial support. Bhante himself has always lived very simply.

At present around 410 Order members are regularly contributing to Uddiyana, a significant number of whom have been doing so since 2008 when there was an appeal to Order members to take over these contributions from Centres and Windhorse Trading. At Bhante’s ninetieth birthday celebrations in 2015 there was an appeal for more support which had a generous response and there was a further generous response with our last mailing to Order members in early 2017.

We are always looking for new supporters and I hope that if you can you will join us. Also, if you are one of our long-standing contributors and are in a position to increase your contribution, that would be much appreciated (if you do make an increase, please drop a line to Shantavira at sangharakshita.appeal@gmail.com to let him know when you have done so). You will find bank and PayPal details by scrolling down this page. Please write to Shantavira or to me at sangharakshita.appeal@gmail.com if you have any queries about your donation.

Thank you!
