Chairs' Letter – August 2020

Tue, 1 Sep, 2020 - 18:52

Dear Order members,

Two weeks ago the International Conventions were held online for the first time, and seem to have been very successful – and remarkably relaxed, given how much work was going on behind the scenes; well done Lokeshvara and Aryajaya! I won’t list all my favourite bits but the Forgiveness ritual led by Malini stood out for me personally, given Malini’s gravitas as our senior most woman OM, her...

Chairs' Letter – July 2020

Fri, 31 Jul, 2020 - 23:22

Dear Order members

At the end of June I moved back to Adhisthana and though I like the simplicity of my cell-like bedroom cum office, people on the other end of Zoom calls have been commenting on the bare walls as, until recently, the only painting was above my desk and behind the computer screen.

Covid-19 and the topic of race and racism, have continued to be major concerns, both within and without our sangha. Both wake up calls...

Chairs' Letter – June 2020

Wed, 1 Jul, 2020 - 12:25

Dear Order members and friends,

June was my last month of solitary lockdown in South Wales. In practice that meant spending even more time than usual on my computer, although I did manage one week offline. I also read Analayo’s Compassion and Emptiness and re-read The Glass Bead Game, and went for long walks along deserted lanes and footpaths in the national park.

I emerged from my week off to the deluge of discussion around the subject...

Chairs' Letter – May 2020

Sun, 31 May, 2020 - 20:42

Dear Order members

For most of us, May has been another month of lockdown and increased online communication. The worldwide anxiety and fear that began centred around coronavirus, now extends to financial and mental health issues. Even if we are one of the fortunate ones not directly affected and in supportive conditions, we are likely to have friends or family who are not; and we are all going to be indirectly affected by changing worldwide conditions, in ways we can only begin...

Rejoicing in Kamalashila – Satyaraja

Thu, 21 May, 2020 - 15:14

During the March Area College gathering for the UK, Ireland and Europe, Kamalashila attended for an evening to have a farewell following his retirement from the Preceptors’ College at the end of last year. He was able to share some of his current threads of practice and inspiration, and a number of those present rejoiced in him. Here we share two of those contributions from Sanghadevi and Satyaraja.

I first met Kamalashila in the early part of 1980 at...

Chairs' Letter – April 2020

Mon, 4 May, 2020 - 11:06

Dear Order members

April was a month that for most of us meant getting used to social distancing or lockdown; concern about the health of ourself or those near and dear to us; and financial anxiety – whether our own or that of the Buddhist Centres and other institutions. Some countries are beginning to consider how and when they might begin to lift restrictions; others are facing worsening conditions of health, finances, and even access to food.

We can only speculate about the future....

Ordination at the London Buddhist Centre

Tue, 7 Apr, 2020 - 11:01

Dear friends,

I am very happy to announce the public ordination of ex-Gus Miller took place on Sunday 5th of April at the London Buddhist Centre. The ordination was not public, but was live-streamed. You can see it here.

Gus becomes Sthiramanas, a Sansksrit name meaning Steadfast Mind.

Maitreyabandhu was his private preceptor and I was his public preceptor.

With metta,

Paramabandhu

Dear Order members,

I have just been part of witnessing the ordination of Varadhi in Melbourne, on Zoom, along with 106 others. Watching the communication between Maitripala, as Public Preceptor, and Itir / Varadhi, with the Buddha, Avalokitesvara, and Bhante...
