Congratulations to Triratna authors Paramabandhu and Vimalasara, whose book Eight Step Recovery: Using the Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction, was recently named in the 2014 USA Best Book Awards, in the self-help category.
Publishers Windhorse Publications are, not surprisingly, delighted at the book’s success. “In terms of sales, Eight Step Recovery is the most successful book that we have published in many, many years, with 2,121 print copies sold and 528 eBooks. Coming up to the anniversary of its release, we have been overwhelmed by the number of people (readers and critics) who have expressed their appreciation, with positive reviews from several Buddhist and recovery communities. We even get cards from people whose lives have been changed by reading the book!”
It’s very satisfying for the authors too. As Paramabandhu commented, “The award should help to make the book more widely known so that more people can benefit from the teachings and find support on their journey of recovery.” More broadly, Vimalasara notices that “Buddhist recovery is becoming one of the most popular gateways to the Dharma in North America. It’s inevitable: the core Buddhist teachings talk about suffering, and every addict has had their share of suffering. More and more people in 12-step recovery programmes are seeing Buddhist teachings as complementary to those programmes.”
Furthermore, she thinks it would be great if Triratna Centres and other Buddhist traditions throughout the world were to use the book as part of what they offer. “It’s simple: just follow the book; do the reflections and exercises; you will be part of helping to save a life.”
The material is available in book study format, a Recovery Evening format, and an Eight Step Recovery Meeting format.
