Purna writes from New Zealand with news of the death of one of their longest-standing Order Members, Dharmachari Taranatha. He says - “This is to inform you that Taranatha passed away around 1 am on Monday 25 Nov 2013 (NZ time) at his residence in Point Chevalier in Auckland, New Zealand. Born 12 Nov 1929, he was 84 years of age. With him at the end were Ratnavyuha, two of Taranatha’s daughters, and also in the house was his carer. Ratnavyuha describes “a lovely atmosphere around him. So much love, and I believe he felt it”.
His was a life well lived in the service of the Dharma and he will be fondly remembered by many dozens of the Auckland and UK Sangha, whether Friends and Mitras or Order members, both from his very active engagement with classes at the Auckland Buddhist Centre (stretching as far back as the 1980’s), friendships within the Order and the very wide and diverse range of people he maintained contact with over the years.
Taranatha was publically ordained 15 June 1992 at Guhyaloka. His Private and Public Preceptor was Subhuti and the practice he was given at ordination was Green Tara.
A service and celebration of Taranatha’s life will take place at the All Saints Chapel, Purewa Crematorium, 100 St Johns Rd, Meadowbank, Auckland, New Zealand on Thursday 28 November 2013 at 1:45pm NZ time. We will also be arranging another celebration at the Auckland Buddhist Centre, which can include any emails Order members and friends want read.
