With sadness we report the death from cancer of Dharmacharini Vajragita, who died very peacefully at home in Amsterdam at around 18.00 local time today, in the company of her community. She was 76 years old.

Vajragita was ordained by Sangharakshita in 1981 in Seaford, Sussex, UK. Her yidam was Padmasambhava. A founder member of the sangha in the Netherlands, she lived and worked at Taraloka (UK) for several years. She recently became a Public preceptor.

In the last few days, when Vajragita was no longer able to read the many postcards she received, her community read them out loud to her ritually, some of them during evening puja.

Details of her funeral will follow.

A brave and compassionate woman, a true heroin of the Dharma, she will be missed. Go in peace wherever you go.

Sad to hear this news. Vajragita was one of my first buddhist teachers, in the late 80. I enjoyed her wise lessons very much and I’m glad she led so many retreats.
