BAM is nearly here. Manchester mitras Rebecca Frost and Claire Morris are the national co-ordinators, for the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK (NBO). They write:

If you really haven’t heard of it yet, let us explain BAM: it’s June and it’s a nationwide month of British Buddhist social action: activities to benefit others in various ways, especially environmentally.

There’s a great deal happening! What’s your sangha doing?
Please rvfrost [at] hotmail.com (email Rebecca and Claire with )rvfrost [at] hotmail.com (your plans.)

Still not sure what your Centre or group could do?
Check out the BAM page of The Buddhist Centre Online.
Use the free event planning resources on the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK (NBO) website.

BAM is organised by the NBO in partnership with Triratna. The suggested theme over the last few years has been care for the environment, but many sanghas are promoting other themes too. To feature just one sangha:

Manchester Buddhist Centre’s Engaged Buddhist Kula have been busy organising various new activities and linking with existing ones. These include

  • a session on Radical Ethics (Dharma in Action)
  • A showing of the film “An Inconvenient Truth”
  • A flashmob meditation on the streets of Manchester, followed discussions with the public to raise awareness of climate change and potential action.
  • two local bioblitz events including a bat walk and mammal identification exercises over two days.
  • Manchester’s Young Buddhists, the 18/40 Group, will be joining in and adding a few events of their own, with the possibility of taking on a local urban allotment.

Wow! Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!
Please rvfrost [at] hotmail.com (tell us about your events in advance.) We need to know what you’re doing!
Please also send us pictures and videos as you go along. Here’s how…

Hello, I think BAM activities are a great idea, I read something about this a while ago and thought it was a Triratna project so started drumming up some interest for a young persons Eco practice day/workshop in Southern Australia. But sounds like this is just a UK thing, is it? We can do our plans any month …

Dear Jodie,

You’re right that this is a British, in fact pan-Buddhist, initiative, but actually a number of other European Triratna groups are taking part too, and why shouldn’t you in Australia too? The more the merrier. Let’s go worldwide in 2015!

And you can do your eco-things any month, as you say. In fact we have a Beyond BAM button at the top of our dedicated BAM page because of course we don’t want people to stop just because it isn’t June any more. Metta, Munisha
