Death of K.R. Norman

Mon, 16 Nov, 2020 - 11:24

The Western Buddhist Review writes with the sad news of the death of Pāli scholar Kenneth Roy Norman, born in 1925, and the same age as Sangharakshita. His translations of early Buddhist texts in verse are more scholarly than poetic, but allow modern Western Buddhists to get close to the word of the Buddha.

From Rupert Gethin, President of the Pali Text Society:

“Roy or Mr Norman, as he liked to be known, was one of the...

Buddhist weddings consultation: England and Wales

Wed, 4 Nov, 2020 - 13:46

As Triratna’s Liaison officer, working with other Buddhists for the good of Buddhism in general, I have long been a member of the committee of the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK. As such, on Friday I attended a Law Commission consultation on the future of weddings law in England and Wales: specifically on weddings that are both (in our case) Buddhist and legally binding.

As the Law Commission has said:

“In our consultation paper, we make provisional proposals for a new...

Triratna reports from the European Buddhist Union meeting 2020

Fri, 25 Sep, 2020 - 10:16

As usual on the last weekend of September, the European Buddhist Union is holding its annual meeting - at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Tuscany, Italy. Sadly most of the roughly 40 participants from many traditions all across Europe are on Zoom this time, for obvious reasons (and your trusty Liaison Officer, Munisha, is sitting in a little hut in Sweden.)

The morning has begun with a presentation from the hosts and the local mayor, followed by the...

Wed, 16 Sep, 2020 - 10:12

You may be interested in this information about events run by Jamyang London (UK), part of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana (FPMT), which has come to me at the Triratna Liaison Office. They write:

“October marks Black History Month in the UK.

Across the country, events will be taking place to celebrate the contributions Black people have made to all aspects of society and culture. This year, the shadow cast by the tragic state killings of...

Buddhists in Europe and COVID-19

Thu, 26 Mar, 2020 - 12:50

Across Europe (and much of the rest of the world) Buddhists of all traditions are deeply affected by the arrival of the new Coronavirus, COVID-19, just like everyone else.

Triratna is a member of the European Buddhist Unionwhose president wrote to all members today.

In the UK and much of the rest of Europe Buddhist temples, centres and retreat centres area closed. Many countries are in ‘lockdown’, people required by law to stay at home most of the time.

Here in Sweden where I...

European Buddhist gatherings 2019

Thu, 21 Nov, 2019 - 13:39

The end of September saw, as usual, the annual gatherings of the European Buddhist Union, and Buddhist Teachers in Europe.

This year the venue was Sangha Activa, a Spanish group in the Sakya lineage of the Vajrayana Tibetan tradition in the countryside an hour north of Barcelona. I attended both meetings as Triratna’s Liaison officer and Vajratara (who lives and works at Tiratanaloka) joined me for the Buddhist Teachers in Europe.

Sangha Activa several years ago took...

Faith for the Climate Network: Speaking out on Climate Change

Thu, 11 Jul, 2019 - 12:03

On 26th June I represented Buddhists at a gathering of the interfaith group, Faith For The Climate Network, which preceded a Mass Lobby of the UK parliament.

Over the last couple of years I have spoken a few times about climate change in my regular Thought for the Day slot on BBC Radio 4. As a result, the co-ordinator of the Faith for the Climate Network invited me to join other faith ‘leaders’...

The Time is Now: Mass lobby of UK parliament 26th June

Thu, 20 Jun, 2019 - 11:30

The Time is Now have written to Triratna, via the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK:

“On 26th June, The Time is Now mass lobby of UK Parliament is taking place, and many faith organisations, faith communities and faith leaders, are taking part.

Workshops, an interfaith Walk of Witness, and interfaith Speaker Event are all taking place ahead of the mass lobby itself.
