The Triratna Buddhist Community of New York / New Jersey has been active for close to 20 years. We are part of a larger Buddhist community, Triratna, which is present in 27 countries.
Currently there are six Order Members and about twenty Mitras connected to our local sangha, including several in the ordination training process. We have seen a good amount of growth in the Order & Mitra sangha in the last five years, particularly as a result of our activities going online. If you are not familiar with the area, know that we are very spread out geographically, and we also have regular members who dial in for sangha activities from out of state.
In 2021, our Council underwent a process to develop a new vision and mission for the years to come. As a community, we are at a pivotal juncture - we have much that is positive to build upon, and we still need to focus our energy to put in place operational systems that ensure support, exposure and impact. In particular, we aim to build our online presence to make us more accessible to practitioners, and to create platforms for more diverse teachers & voices within our sangha and beyond.
HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Triratna New York / New Jersey is looking to hire a Communications Manager to help us build up our mailing list and our online presence. This person would manage our newsletters, website and social media accounts. We would love to engage someone to help execute on our strategy, in line with the vision and mission referenced above, and to contribute their own creativity and enthusiasm to our project.
HOW WE CAN SUPPORT YOU TO SUPPORT US
Our Communications Manager would be part of a team that includes a Triratna NY/NJ Council Member responsible for communications, various volunteers (a “Comms kula”), and the support of sangha members involved in producing events in person and on-line.
Training on technology systems would be provided, depending on the needs of the person (see below). These are very useful technical skills for anyone developing professional on-line activities.
We are not yet financially in a position to offer staff jobs with benefits. As a result this is a part-time contract position, paid hourly, which can be done remotely (you do not need to be local to NY or NJ, but you would need to be available for conference calls on an EST time zone).
We estimate this work to start at 10 to 15 hours a month for the time being, and it could build up to 8-10 hours a week in the months and years to come, depending on our growth. Depending on your level of experience and technical skills, the rate would be $25 to $40 / hour.

Connection to Triratna:
It would be great to engage someone familiar with Triratna from our worldwide sangha. Experience working within a center team or small sangha would be a big plus. This being said, we would consider any qualified candidate genuinely interested in the work and who is sympathetic to our culture and spiritual commitment. Prior experience working in (any) community of faith will be helpful, but not necessary.
