Sunday at the International Gathering

Mon, 28 Aug, 2017 - 20:09

On our last full day we heard from Triratna Hungary, with a presentation from mitra Tibor Derdak of the Dr Ambedkar High School, which offers gypsy girls and boys a way out of poverty and discrimination. As he said, quoting Subhuti, if the Buddha were to walk down the street in Hungary today, everyone would assume he was a gypsy.

Dhammamegha gave us an excellent talk on the importance of sangha and friendship: ‘Wisdom’s gathering: the difference that...

The mystery of the red T shirts

Sun, 27 Aug, 2017 - 15:46

Taking and editing pictures throughout the International Gathering, I’ve gradually become aware of a certain redness growing all around me.

More and more people are wearing red T shirts.

More and more people are taking out monthly standing orders to the FutureDharma Fund.

And people who commit themselves to monthly giving to Triratna projects around the world in this way get a free red “Pass it on” T shirt! (See the pictures.)

In celebration of generosity (and in...

Saturday at the International Gathering

Sat, 26 Aug, 2017 - 16:46

It being Bhante Sangharakshita’s 92nd birthday, at 10.45am all were assembled in the Adhisthana courtyard. As we waited we chanted the mantra sabbe satta sukkhi hontu (May all beings be well and happy!) Paramartha helped Bhante towards a chair, we sang Happy Birthday, he blew out the candles on a very small cake presented by Zoe Lim (the only mitra in Singapore) and Dhiraprabha presented him with a giant roll of birthday greetings from us.

Today, following on from the previous day’s slot focusing on...

Friday at the International Gathering

Fri, 25 Aug, 2017 - 22:08

It’s been a lively, warm and sunny day here in Herefordshire, UK. Our numbers swelled to around 330 by the end of a well-spent day.

The shrine tent was impressively full for 7am meditation, well rewarded by the efforts of the Sheffield Porridge Team, who cooked porridge for 200. Later in the morning the Polish sangha introduced themselves, after which Prajnaketu, Young Buddhist Co-ordinator, gave the morning’s excellent talk (without notes), entitled “The Return of the Bodhisattva”. You can listen to it...

August 26th, 2017: Bhante's birthday!

Fri, 11 Aug, 2017 - 09:06

On 26 August, right in the middle of the International Gathering, is Bhante’s birthday! A very special 92nd birthday and we are hoping, if Bhante if well enough, that he can join us in the marquee before the evening puja so we can all wish him a Happy Birthday and many happy returns of the day.

The evening’s puja on the 26th will be Led by Vassika, and dedicated to Bhante. She is planning to bring out the theme of Bhante’s life and...

An introduction to Buddhist meditation

Thu, 10 Aug, 2017 - 10:26

Abhayanandi is offering an introduction to meditation session on the Saturday afternoon 3.45 - 5.45pm. This might be especially welcome to those who are not at their best and brightest at 7am in the morning,  when there will also be an introductory session on the Friday 25th.

Abyahanandi lives and works in London around the London Buddhist Centre; she is a trustee at the Buddhist Centre and a member of the Lama Pyjama’s team, the LBC’s charity shop on Roman road.

SEEING WITH NEW EYES with Parami

SEEING WITH NEW EYES with Parami

Sat, 5 Aug, 2017 - 10:47

Parami is well known to many of us …. currently she is one the international order conveners, but is also known throughout the Spanish-speaking world as one of the early order members setting up the Valencia Buddhist Centre. Closer to home, and beyond that, she is much-loved for her open-hearted and straightforward commitment to bringing about the arising of bodhicitta, the intention for our community to benefit all being’.

On the International gathering she is offering this workshop -

Paganism and the Dharma

Paganism and the Dharma

Wed, 26 Jul, 2017 - 12:24

This fabulously interesting workshop aims to explore the common ground between paganism and the Dharma. Ratnadeva writes -

“We will look at extracts from Bhante’s writings, in which he describes possible benefits for Western Buddhism of engaging with paganism. More specifically we will look at animism as a common mythical context. I will describe how I have been exploring these complementarities within the context of team-based-right-livlihood with Buddhafield. There will be time for a (hopefully!) open-minded and open-hearted discussion, during which we...

The Song of the Sangha!

The Song of the Sangha!

Tue, 18 Jul, 2017 - 08:40

A lovely opportunity for us to take part in at the International Gathering: Arthasiddhi will be leading a choir every afternoon over the course of the weekend.

A new simple, rousing chant has been written for this event, setting the very words in which the Buddha celebrated the first reaching-out-into-the-world of the Sangha - we will be singing it in the final puja.  Come and enjoy singing this chant and other simple harmony music including African chant; raise your voices...
