Poems on Metta - Loving Kindness
On Sat, 9 November, 2013 - 17:11
If you didn’t already catch this during the week, here’s a great video from Manidha and Alice in Seattle,
using poems from different spiritual traditions to explore what
(loving kindness) is!
Watch out for the outtakes at the end… :)
This piece was originally posted on the
Urban Retreat 2013 space

The best bit of your insightful wee film is your infectious laughter at the beginning. I will be leading The Poet’s Way event at the San Francisco Buddhist Centre on Saturday, and here’s one of the poems that I will be reading:
by Iain Crighton Smith
It neither was the words nor yet the tune.
Any tune would have don and any words.
Any listener andnot listener at all.
As nightingales in rocks or a child crooning
in its own world of strange awakening
or larks for no reason but themselves.
So on the bus through late November running
by yellowlights tormented, darkness falling,
the two girls sang for miles and miles together
and if wasn’t the words or tune. It was the singing.
It was the human sweetness in that yellow,
the unpredicted voices of our kind.

I hadn’t finished my response when the message flew away. There were a couple of typos in the poem Two Girls Singing: second line: “Any tune would have done and any words.” Third line: “Any listener and no listener at all.”
And I meant to say that the two women laughing reminded me of the two girls singing…..but that’s obvious isn’t it!

I missed Saturday being away leading The Poet’s Way at the San Francisco Buddhist Centre. I decided to make today day 8 of the Blazing like the Sun retreat, but sadly all the video links seem to be disconnected. Please advise. Larry

Hi Larry, sorry to hear you’re having trouble viewing the videos. I just checked and all seems well, so I supect you may possibly be logged out? Make sure you can see your name top right of any page - if not, you’ll need to log in again to see the retreat materials (though we will be making them all public soon and have just posted compedium links).
