Every summer we have the quirkily named “Summertime Specials”, a series of Dharma talks, and this year’s theme is The Five Precepts. To accompany this series we’re having Vegan Summer - the GBC is going totally vegan for six weeks! How best to put the 1st Precept into action?!

Starting on Thursday 18th July, we’ll launch the Vegan Summer and Summertime Specials with an evening dedicated to the precepts, introducing the talks and celebrating with a festive puja. We’ll enjoy delicious vegan baking and also launch our Vegan Summer Raffle, with prizes from local restaurants and food producers.

The Summertime Special talks will then run every Thursday at 7.30pm until 22 August:
25th July - 2nd Precept - Open-handed generosity, by Danabhadri
1st August - 3rd Precept - Stillness, simplicity and contentment, by Gunasiddhi
8th August - 1st Precept - Deeds of loving kindness, by Maitrisiddha
15th August - 4th Precept - Truthful communication, by Abhayavaca
22nd August - 5th Precept - Mindfulness, clear and radiant, by Vairocana

Wow! Sounds amazing! Please let us know how it turns out. We are a few here in the Stockholm sangha who are working on making the center more ethical and vegan and we would love any ideas or experiences from other centers.

This is brilliant, as a vegan and a Buddhist I am so utterly heartened and inspired to hear of initiatives like this. (And nice that it’s in my home town, where I first started exploring vegetarianism and veganism back in the 70s and a city that has been voted most vegan friendly in the UK, yay!!)

I hope it all went really well for you. If you want to try it again or just need further inspiration, the group I work for has a useful 30 Day Vegan scheme. It’s all free and you get loads of things. We had hundreds sign up to the first month - the feedback has been ovewhlemingly positive but I am currently working on improvements thanks to some useful feedback.

Here is the link to the page The 30 Day Vegan
and also our L-Plate Vegan Guide is v.useful too… (html version almost finished but you can check it out as a pdf in the meantime - or buy hard copy for under £2 if you so wish.

I’ll send this to Glasgow BC too…
