Ratnaguna - Three Talks On The Pureland

Wed, 13 Jan, 2016 - 00:09

A new three-part series from Ratnaguna introduces the Pureland texts as a practice in themselves, and discusses their relationship to Sangharakshita’s core teachings.

In the first talk Ratnaguna takes us on an excellent exploration of imagination itself, essential for understanding the sutras on their own terms. The second talk discusses how the texts hint at what Sangharakshita calls the supra-personal force of the Bodhichitta. The third talk is on the importance of sangha in the sutras and its relevance...

ECA Winter 2016: Days 5 & 6

Sun, 10 Jan, 2016 - 22:18

Yesterday the 35 or so European Chairs began the day with meditation as every day; followed by a presentation on the work of the College of Public Preceptors, from its Chair, Saddhaloka.

They looked at ideas for future international celebrations of Triratna: there’s the 60th anniversary of Dr Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism, which falls in 14th October this year and is so particularly important for our sangha in India. In April 2017 there is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Friends of...

ECA Winter 2016: Days 1-4

Sat, 9 Jan, 2016 - 14:52

The first of the ECA’s two meetings this year began last Monday evening.

The first day was spent, as usual, in groups sharing their lives as Order members and as Chairs of Triratna centres and other Triratna enterprises in Europe; friendship is at the heart of the ECA meetings, as well as the work itself. Many of the Chairs have been coming for years, or know each other from other Triratna gatherings. Thus business takes place in an atmosphere of...

European Chairs assembly Meeting August 2015: report by Nandavajra

More than 30 Triratna European Centre Chairs gathered at Adhisthana from 12th to 20th August for the summer European Chairs Assembly and were joined by members of the Preceptors College, non-European guest Chairs (Shubhavyuha from Sydney and Sudaya from Melbourne), representatives from movement wide projects and members of the Development Team. The Adhisthana team and community were very attentive, generous but unobtrusive hosts despite the fact that they were working very hard to...

Day 7 at the ECA

Wed, 19 Aug, 2015 - 20:17

This morning Triratna’s European Chairs held their business meeting, in which the main item was the allocation of their Development Fund for 2016. (See the photo-summary of these grants.)

The ECA’s Development Fund generally totals around £100,000 per year, donated by Triratna Centres and enterprises all over Europe, as well as by some Centres further afield. This year they’ve given £116,000 and, thanks to Amalavajra’s fundraising, there’s an additional £20,000 - and there could be another £30,000 too. So, two budgets...

Day 6 at the ECA

Tue, 18 Aug, 2015 - 20:54

To the sound of lorries delivering food and folding chairs for this weekend’s Order gathering to celebrate Bhante’s 90th birthday, Vidyamala presented the history and evolution of Breathworks, the mindfulness project she founded in 2001 to help people live better with pain and illness. She also talked about “mainstream” mindfulness teaching as Bodhisattva activity in an intensely suffering world.

Hear a short, inspiring interview with Vidyamala.

In Q & A and small groups, the Chairs continued their exploration of the...

Day 5 at the ECA

Day 5 at the ECA

Mon, 17 Aug, 2015 - 22:38

Today we’ve been looking at the phenomenon of mindfulness in UK society, now to be found in settings including prisons, schools and healthcare. What should be the response of Triratna Buddhist Centres; the relationship between what’s being taught in secular society and what we teach in Triratna?

We began with a presentation from Vishvapani who has been working with the UK Parliament at Westminster. He’s been editing the All Party Parliamentary Group’s report, ‘Mindful Nation’, to be published...

Day 4 at the ECA

Sun, 16 Aug, 2015 - 22:19

The sun is shining on Adhisthana and we’ve been considering the future of fundraising in Triratna: creating a stronger culture of giving worldwide, so that all the core institutions, services and people on which Triratna’s life depends worldwide (for example, the College of Public Preceptors - responsible for ordinations - Clear Vision, Free Buddhist Audio and Windhorse Publications) are better resourced.

Afternoons are a mix of free time, special interest groups and business. Amongst many other things this afternoon saw a gathering of the...

Day 3 at the ECA

Sat, 15 Aug, 2015 - 21:16

Today the European Chairs continued their exploration of the culture of Triratna centres, with discussion groups about yesterday’s talk on Triratna’s Six Distinctive Emphases, followed by the presentation of a consultation document setting out defining characteristics of a Triratna centre and principles underlying its running.

There is broad willingness to ensure that the interpretation and application of the Six Emphases continues to evolve according to the needs of new generations of Buddhists.

The afternoon break saw many of us taking walks and naps or...

Day 2 at the ECA

Fri, 14 Aug, 2015 - 22:34

As always, the ECA day began with double meditation followed by porridge!

We are around 40 women and men (the number of women has been going steadily up for several years) with a couple of guests from Australia, and the Development Team employed by the ECA to provide year-round services to all Centres, such as fundraising and communications. We also have with us visitors from other Triratna groupings such as the Public Preceptors, to ensure good communication and networking.

Having spent yesterday reconnecting in...
