Raising the RoofOn Mon, 13 February, 2017 - 15:52
Wow, racing into week 3. First thing Monday morning, timber for the roof supports was delivered and the workmen were immediately on the case, fixing up new purlins. Maybe you don’t know what purlins are, neither did we until recently. But we can all be assured now that we’ve got new ones. Many of the old timbers were very old, weakened and in some cases charred (historical fire), so have been removed and the remaining timbers, reinforced. As soon as our contractor Svajunas came on site, we were discussing velux windows, manual or solar, and importantly, where to put them to maximise light. Our workmen have impressed us again this week with their efficiency in rebuilding most of the shrine roof structure. By Wednesday the ceiling was coming down! A much sturdier frame is being installed with the top layers ready to be applied.
If we do mantras for dry weather, they will be ready to apply the final roof membrane by the end of week 4. Despite the cold and damp weather, our workmen have remained very positive and light hearted, we just make sure they have a supply of cakes and/or biscuits!
Last week we re-advertised our Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Appeal, and sent out messages through social media about the need to raise a further £20,000. We’ve made this easier by setting up our charity for the Paypal Giving Fund, which allows donations to be gift aided and reduces fees for all transactions. We’ve also signed up to Ebay for Charities. This enables anyone buying or selling on Ebay, to donate funds directly to us, and also sell items to benefit the charity.
