Two Invitations

Posted by dharmalata on Tue, 16 Jan, 2018 - 05:48

Dear Coogee Meditators

On the Australia Day Long Weekend The Sydney Buddhist Centre is holding a retreat to which you are all invited. It’s a lovely opportunity to relax, invest come care into our retreat centre and also have a retreat experience of meditation and some reflection on The Buddha’s teachings. We are on the banks of The Georges River and the swimming is lovely - there’ll be time to relax and unwind.

Here’s a link if you’d like to book. Cost is $50...

Meditation is .....

Posted by dharmalata on Mon, 8 Jan, 2018 - 20:42

To Meditate is to stop, be present and acknowledge gently and fully what is going on. And then to turn the mind, supported by kindness towards the object you have chosen whether it be one’s breath, kindness or anything else.

By doing this we gradually create a mind imbued with those qualities: friendliness, spaciousness, calm, attentiveness …….

I hope you can join us for meditation this week:

The Breeze of the Dharma

It was beautiful: an elixir. A cool breeze can revivify, uplift one’s spirits and give us the encouragement to carry on.
Or, it can just bring sweet and very welcome relief …….

And it reminded me of the parable of the rain cloud which The Buddha used to describe the...

Why Meditate?

Posted by dharmalata on Tue, 14 Nov, 2017 - 01:16

Applying right speech is difficult in the beginning … but if you practice every time you talk to someone, the mind will learn how to be aware, to understand what it should or should not say, and to know when it is necessary to talk.

—Sayadaw U Tejaniya, “The Wise Investigator”

In a very simple sense I meditate because it helps me. Sometimes it feels mechanical but i keep going because …. coming back to the...

Puja Friday Night

Posted by dharmalata on Tue, 31 Oct, 2017 - 00:31

On Saturday night it’s a full moon. A time when the earth’s energies are stirred and the tides moved!

To meditate under a full moon is especially efficacious!

So if the weather if fine we’ll have a short meditation and Buddhist devotional ceremony on the Coogee Headland but if it’s wet (as predicted) it will be held in the Coogee Croquet Club - I will send out an email on Friday letting you know

Metta in Crescent Heads

Posted by dharmalata on Mon, 16 Oct, 2017 - 21:45

Sitting on my bed this morning in Crescent Heads. Up here with old surf buddies from Adelaide. Most of them are at that stage of life where collectively they’ve created a tribe of young kids. It’s actually a sort of father and sons gig and me, with my 26 year old lad back in Sydney, enjoying the limited freedom of being a friendly uncle.
