The third traditional Buddhist precept in its positive form says ‘with stillness, simplicity and contentment I purify my body’
But stillness, simplicity and contentment are precious commodities in contemporary urban life. The pressure and conditioning surrounding us to do just the opposite is relentless; stay busy, go after sophistication and acquire stuff seems to be the predominant message.
If you’re anything like me, the drive to set up the ideal life, complete with home, partner, holidays, gadgets yada, yada ………….. is something that can distract me from the very precious opportunity to be present and taste life in its incredible and subtle beauty and richness. I miss so much of what is available because I’m caught up in the business of building a fictional future ……
So how can the Buddha’s teaching infuse our life like the perfume of incense? How can we work with our conditions gently and skilfully in order to move increasingly toward a life that is truly conscious, spacious and engaged with what is truly and deeply close to our heart’s aspiration?
Using the Buddha’s third precept as our inspiration we will explore, supported by meditation, reflection and discussion, this fascinating and life-changing subject.
