“So how do we cultivate attentiveness in meditation? The key to success lies mostly in what we do outside meditation. Many people fondly imagined they’ll be able to sit down and meditate when they wish, whatever else they’ve been up to. But when we try to meditate we find ourself face to face with all the mental habits that we have unintentionally cultivated in our daily life. When we meditate we can’t use some ‘special mind’ that we reserve for meditation; it’s our ordinary mind that we must work with …….

As much as possible you therefore need to make the environment of your life supportive of meditation; not too much distraction, a reasonable degree of solitude, time for reflection, surroundings that are as attractive as possible in the circumstances, and companionship that encourages greater seriousness of purpose, while at the same time being enlivening, pleasurable and playful.”
