Buddhist Action Month 2017 starts here

Thu, 2 Mar, 2017 - 13:35

Dear friends,

it feels a bit like spring as I write this, and perhaps that is an auspicious time to turn our minds to Buddhist Action Month 2017.

I know that some Triratna Centres and their respective ‘engaged Buddhist’ groups have already got plans for June and what they want to see happening during Buddhist Action Month; but for others this might be a first reminder that it is not too soon to turn our minds to the early summer and start thinking what...

On June 26 there will be an action planning day. This will be a chance for interested people to brainstorm what the Melbourne Sangha could do collectively rather than simply as individuals to be as effective as possible in addressing the climate crisis. It will start with a short talk by Tejopala on climate change and the five precepts.

June 26 @ 13:15 in Great Hall > Meditate for Peace, for Nuclear Disarmament, for Mass Investment in Renewables and Green Jobs

Wed, 22 Jun, 2016 - 15:44

On June 26, Sheffield Buddhist Centre will join the international Triratna Buddhist Community to demonstrate our desire for peace, and our opposition to nuclear power. Santasiddhi and Christine will lead the event, which may be akin to a ”love-in” as prescribed by  Sangharakshita in his 1984 talk on “Buddhism, World Peace, and Nuclear War” (*).

The meditation will take place in the Great Hall during Summer Fair at 13:15.

In 2016, parliament will vote whether to replace and modernise the UK’s nuclear weapons system called Trident. It’s made up of four submarines – one of which is on...

Sheffield June 19 > Day of rejoicing (in our efforts, so far)

Mon, 20 Jun, 2016 - 14:31

A small group came together for a day of reflection, contemplation and rejoicings on Sun. June 19th. Although we were only 5 individuals, we had all participated on Sheffield’s first BAM event (Natural Dharma), so we were familiar with each others’ Green Precepts and with each other.

In addition to meditation, Suddhacandika led us through reflections of gratitude, for which we wrote our rejoicings on paper-cut-out hands and offered these to the shrine, to Avalokitesvara. Later we Harvested the gifts of the...

Metta for the oceans, supermarkets and shoppers! John West unsustainable fishing protest at Sainsbury’s

Text: Maitrisiddhi

Photos: Lisa Lens

It was a hot muggy Tuesday 7th of June.  At a quarter to five, we were crowded round the table in the dark Taraloka community kitchen.  You’d’ve thought we were preparing a bank heist.  A pencilled sketch map of the front of Sainsbury’s supermarket in Whitchurch was spread out in front of us.  I’d cased the joint the night before.

‘So we’ll put ourselves there – next to the...

Good on you all! What an excellent thing to do. Protest and metta can go hand in hand, and this is such a clear example. I hope Sainsbury’s changes its policy soon. Just clicked on the link and sent my email to their CEO

Well done!  Found your account(s) really inspiring.  Especially loved that interaction with the duty manager.  sadhu

Dear all, I felt really moved reading your account of your sit-in at Sainsbury”s. Well done all of you! There is something about the power of silence and just not responding to something that we don’t like with the habitual tools of aversion, aggression, and force  but instead just have the courage and conviction to sit there in silence and radiate metta, that I find deeply moving and feel quite inspired by! Good on you :)

And I can well imagine that you’ve been the fourth sight to quite a few of the good people of Whitchurch. I’ve signed the petition too!

Film Nights:-

PLANETARY  friday 10th June 18:30

We are in the midst of a global crisis of perspective. We have forgotten the undeniable truth that everything is connected. PLANETARY is a provocative and breathtaking wakeup call, a cross continental, cinematic journey, that explores our cosmic origins and our future as a species. PLANETARY is a poetic and humbling reminder that it’s time to shift our perspective. PLANETARY asks us to rethink who we really are, to reconsider our relationship...

BAM at the Melbourne Buddhist Centre - film evening

The Melbourne Buddhist Centre will be participating in BAM this year for the first time.

On June 1 there will be a viewing of the film ‘This Changes Everything’ by Naomi Klein.

Throughout the month members of the Sangha will be making pledges of their own choice to do things to reduce their carbon emissions. These pledges will be put on the wall of the Centre on a beautiful poster designed by Dhiracharita....
