Me and Babies by Dhammadinna

From Community Highlights on Sun, 21 Jan, 2018 - 10:00

This is my personal story of my decision, as a Dharmacharini, as to whether or not to have a baby. It is explored within the mores (conventions) of the time in Triratna.

I was 20 years old, and in my last year at University, when I became accidentally pregnant. I knew that I did not want a child at that point in my life. I had thought, however, since I was a child playing with my dollies, that I would have children...

Dharma Life - Family Life

From Community Highlights on Fri, 19 Jan, 2018 - 17:31

One of the tasks the Adhisthana Kula set itself was to encourage people within Triratna to take a fresh look at some of those areas of practice and lifestyle that have been of real value and importance, and which sometimes have been put forward in an unhelpful way.

We look to build an Order and movement in which anyone who sincerely wishes to commit themselves to the Three Jewels can find a place and have something to give, whatever their...

Adhisthana Kula - An Update On Our Work (September 2017)

Sat, 23 Sep, 2017 - 13:05

The FWBO/Triratna was formed to alleviate the suffering of the world through practising and sharing the Dharma, the teaching of the Buddha, and that remains at our heart. Over 50 years we have created an Order and Movement that have touched and transformed the lives of thousands of people around the world. The journey has been inspiring and challenging, and not without difficulties. We deeply regret where anyone’s involvement with our Order and Movement has led to suffering and...

A Complex Personality: A Note - a new piece of writing by Sangharakshita

Tue, 8 Aug, 2017 - 20:21

In his personal statement issued on December 30th 2016 Sangharakshita said, among other things:

  1. that the FWBO/Triratna sometimes bore the marks not of the Dharma but of his own particular personality;
  2. that his personality was a complex one.

In a new piece of writing, ‘A Complex Personality: A Note’, he explores what he had in mind when he wrote this. He highlights those marks of his personality which have had a positive impact on Triratna as it is today,...

Triratna: Safeguarding with sincerity and integrity

from Munisha, European Safeguarding officer, Triratna

Dear Friends,

I’m sure, like me, you want to be absolutely sure Triratna is doing its Safeguarding properly, with sincerity and integrity. Over the last nine months I’ve read online much doubt and criticism in this area so I’d like to tell you about this work, so that you can decide for yourself.

I have been developing central Safeguarding policy for Triratna since 2013 and I’d like to reassure you that I am absolutely serious about this work: my family suffered for many years...

Why Restorative approach?

Why Restorative approach?

Thu, 15 Jun, 2017 - 17:34

Why Restorative approach?

In March this year, the Preceptors’ College committed to a number of steps that they would be taking in the coming months. They included:

  • encouraging and assisting the establishment of the facts about our past, including about Bhante, openly acknowledging what has happened and putting it on record;
  • actively seeking to resolve any harm that has been done, using the principles of the Dharma, with outside experienced guidance where appropriate.

We’d like to give a bit more information about a way in which we are...

Urgyen Sangharakshita On Discipleship: A Postscript To ‘What Is The Western Buddhist Order?’

Mon, 1 May, 2017 - 16:06

On 12th April Sangharakshita sent a letter to all members of the Triratna Buddhist Order, A Note on ‘Disciple’: a Postscript to ‘What is the Western Buddhist Order?’

We now share this here as in this letter Sangharakshita has clarified an  important aspect of the relationship of Order members to him, and him to them, and this is no doubt of relevance to the wider Triratna Community.

A Reconciliation Process

Thu, 13 Apr, 2017 - 14:37

From the outside Triratna can look like a homogenous organisation, but from within for much of our history it’s looked more anarchic and un-systematic, relying on personal connections with each project or centre financially and legally independent.  This has had many advantages but one significant disadvantage is that when relations have broken down there haven’t always been sufficient formal or consistent ways of acknowledging and repairing harm or restoring connection.

We place a high value on friendship in our community.  One of...

Letter from the Chair of the College of Public Preceptors to all Order Members

Fri, 31 Mar, 2017 - 23:56

Following the March meeting of the College of Public Preceptors, Saddhaloka, as Chair of the College, sent a message to all Order members. The ten-day meeting had been concerned with issues currently being raised regarding the Triratna Buddhist Order and Community, and Saddhaloka wanted to communicate the position of the College on these issues. We are now posting the letter, slightly adapted for a wider readership, on the Adhisthana Kula blog, to make it available to all who are interested. The Kula will be continuing...
