Buddhist Action Month 2019

Thu, 21 Feb, 2019 - 19:38

Buddhist Action Month: (BAM!) is an annual festival of Buddhist social action. It started in Britain in 2012 and has since spread out across Europe and beyond. Social action is one of the manifestations of METTA, the strong intention to create Loving Kindness for all, which is embodied in the desire to act for the benefit of the world. Practising this is at the heart of everything we do in the Triratna Buddhist Community.

The Essence of BAM: is to encourage individual...

BAM Handbooks - ideas and inspiration for June!

Sun, 27 May, 2018 - 15:46

I’ve attached the Triratna version of the Buddhist Action Month Handbook which  I compiled in 2016 and is full of suggestions and ideas for Buddhist action ranging from litter picks over guerrilla gardening to a commitment to a month of ‘five minute interventions’.

It also contains an Event Planning Guide, a template for an Energy Audit for your Buddhist Centre, supporting info on how to become a Sustainable Buddhist Centre and other helpful ideas.

In addition and more up to date in terms of...

Breaking the silence, changing the story: Buddhism versus neoliberalism

Fri, 11 May, 2018 - 06:47

I’ve written a very brief introduction to neoliberal ideas and some of the ways they affect the current global political and ecological situation.  It explores many ways Buddhism and Buddhists are already presenting profound challenges to the neoliberal story - and celebrates this range of responses.  There’s a great deal of excellent work already going on - and a better world is certainly possible.  From meditating in the natural world to rewilding to non-violent direct action for older people (to...

2017 BAM report

Mon, 9 Apr, 2018 - 09:40

Christine Thuring is one of our greatest BAM enthusiasts. After several years organising and running events in Sheffield, Christine has been coordinating Buddhist Action Month on behalf of the Network of Buddhist Organisations (NBO) since 2016. The NBO initiated the BAM campaign in 2012, and is a UK-based organisation uniting numerous Buddhist traditions. (Because Triratna is a member of the NBO, all members of the Triratna sangha in the UK are automatically members of the NBO. Check it out, there are lots of interesting projects...

Are you ready for BAM?! YES!

Thu, 8 Jun, 2017 - 10:17

Thanks to Arthasiddhi and his choir at the Cambridge Buddhist Centre we now have our own Buddhist Action Month song! How excellent, and fun too, perhaps we can get friends in our situations to learn this song too :)

Thank you to Arthasiddhi, choir members, Dayasara who had the idea, and Yashodaka!

Here are the words - written by Yashodaka, so you can sing a long:

Help the world, forget yourself,

be a Bodhisattva,

this month of June, the month of June.

Generous hearts around the world,

we can make a difference, if...

Do the plastic challenge for BAM 2017

Thu, 4 May, 2017 - 09:52

The UK Marine Conservation Society have kindly laid on a Plastic Challenge just for us during Buddhist Action Month in June!!

They are inviting people to go for a day, a week, a month without single-use plastic - I tried this last year, and was sobered how very hard it was to do; but it is real eye-opener. A great action to have a go at for BAM with some friends or your sangha, and it will certainly raise...

Special action for 2017 - #6: 'Climate Change for Beginners: a workshop'

Thu, 13 Apr, 2017 - 22:45

I’m keen to encourage more open discussion of climate change and the ethical issues it brings with it. I’ve facilitated a few sessions with Triratna groups on this topic, so have put together some notes for anyone who wants to hold a short workshop on this topic. Alongside this, I’m going to put together a short video on climate change and why it matters to Buddhists, which I will post here soon.

Special action for #5: a course called 'Saving the Earth'

Sun, 9 Apr, 2017 - 19:12

For the second year running for BAM I’ll be offering a free meditation & Buddhism course in Istanbul called, “Saving the Earth” based on Akuppa’s book. I’ve designed a 6 week course for regulars that can be used for English speaking Triratna centres and groups. The book is now 8-9 years old but I also include more up to date material written last year by Tejopala. There are just a few copies of the book left by e-books are available. If...
