You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows

Wed, 17 Jul, 2019 - 18:16

I’m giving a talk and hosting a discussion on this topic at the Dharma Parlour at the Buddhafield Festival this Friday at 2pm. For those of you who can’t make it, I’ve written this blog.

I’m committed to non-violence, personally and politically. Looking to the past for inspiration, Gandhi turned non-violence into a powerful political instrument. More recently, Extinction Rebellion has done the same in relation to the climate crisis.

Gandhi encouraged us to be the change that we wish to see in the...

Faith for the Climate Network: Speaking out on Climate Change

Faith for the Climate Network: Speaking out on Climate Change

From Triratna In The Buddhist World on Thu, 11 Jul, 2019 - 12:03

On 26th June I represented Buddhists at a gathering of the interfaith group, Faith For The Climate Network, which preceded a Mass Lobby of the UK parliament.

Over the last couple of years I have spoken a few times about climate change in my regular Thought for the Day slot on BBC Radio 4. As a result, the co-ordinator of the Faith for the Climate Network invited me to join other faith ‘leaders’...

BAM 2019 - Fundraiser

Tue, 9 Jul, 2019 - 03:29

This year at the WBC we have been unable to participate fully in BAM due to a lack of resources but I think it’s important that we as Buddhists think about the outward facing aspect of our practice, there can be a bit of a tendency to get really focussed inwards, either on ourselves or on the Wellington Sangha. We can forget that we are part of a much larger picture.

This year we have had a focus on Sangha...

BAM in Ipswich and far beyond

BAM in Ipswich and far beyond

Sun, 30 Jun, 2019 - 08:27

A range of activities this year. A highlight was last Wednesday’s The Time is Now  for environmental action. That brought Polly and myself from the Ipswich Sangha and thousands more to central London. Workshops at St Martin’s in the Fields, then a ‘walk of witness’ along Whitehall, talks in Church House, and lobbying MPs from all the main political parties. A good number of Buddhists there and uplifting communication with a wide range of people.

I’ll remember Anya, the youngest speaker, who is...

The Great Plant Give Away at ‘Hidden Gems’- the TBRL Charity Shop for the Croydon Buddhist Centre

The Great Plant Give Away at ‘Hidden Gems’- the TBRL Charity Shop for the Croydon Buddhist Centre

Thu, 13 Jun, 2019 - 15:58

Every year ‘Hidden Gems’ marks Buddhist Action Month. It’s a great way of engaging with our customer and local community. In previous years we have given out information about being vegan with its environmental benefits; last year we highlighted ethical issues around  the clothing industry.

This June we wanted to bring out generosity and to thank our customers and people who donate to us. Our shop runs on dana- people giving us their unwanted items and with some love and care, we re- home them, in the process supporting four Buddhists...

UK Prime minister thanks faith leaders for 'net zero' letters

Wed, 12 Jun, 2019 - 13:48

Today the UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced her government will enact law to set a net zero target for carbon emissions

Today she writes on Twitter that “Many businesses, faith leaders and climate change campaigners have written to me in support of a #NetZero emissions target. Here’s my response confirming that the UK will be the first major economy in the world to legislate for it.”

Recently a number of religious leaders had signed an interfaith petition calling for this, including me, signing...

Faith events and Mass Lobby of Parliament 26th June, London

Thu, 6 Jun, 2019 - 16:16

Hi all,

On 26th June the Climate Coalition is organising a mass lobby of parliament, which is being preceded by Faith events.

Vishvapani has posted about these events already, but I wanted to add to the post some information for anyone from Triratna who would like to meet up to take part in the Interfaith Walk of Witness together.

Our meeting point will be the front steps that lead up to the main entrance to St Martin in the Fields Church on Trafalgar Square. (This is where the faith workshops...

Buddhist Action Month 2019 gets underway!

From Triratna News on Thu, 6 Jun, 2019 - 16:10

Buddhist Action Month 2019 kicked off this week! Buddhist Action Month, or BAM, is an annual festival of Buddhist social action, an opportunity to explicitly bring Metta - or loving-kindness - off the cushion into the world around us. As in previous years, a number of Sanghas across Triratna are participating in this year’s BAM. Here’s a quick look at what some have in store.

At the North London Buddhist Centre there will be opportunities to make...

BAM at the Bristol Buddhist Centre

Wed, 5 Jun, 2019 - 16:42

We’ve planned a great series of Friday evening events at the Bristol Buddhist Centre for BAM this year and are much looking forward to kicking BAM off with our first one this week. We’ll be focusing on a different theme each week, and there will be plenty of time to discuss our individual responses and actions that we might want to take. Come and join us - everyone is welcome to all of the evenings.

Arrive from 7.15pm for a prompt 7.30pm...
