In this interview, Jinavamsa asks Vajradevi if trauma surfaces, could that be the result of long term practice or is it something we are doing, or not doing in our approach? And could meditation teachers benefit from some training to recognise when people they teach are coming up against trauma and acute anxiety?
In addition to our regular work, this year the Abhayaratna Trust is focusing on mental health – an important area of wellbeing in the Order – through a series of interviews. This month, Advayasiddhi, a clinical psychologist based in Copenhagen, talks with the Abhayaratana Trust’s Utpalavajri.
The second wave of covid is causing poverty, distress and death in India. Very sadly we have lost several members of the Order to covid in recent days. Currently 15 Order members are unwell with covid to the point of needing medicines and / or oxygen. With public health supplies running low, these things need to be paid for privately. We want to send £150 to each of these Order members to give them this ability.
The Abhayaratna Trust have launched a Local Care Network project which aims to help the Order develop more explicit and organised frameworks of care and support for Order members who need it, including accessing financial assistance and other services. The Network will also reinforce the existing culture of care in the Triratna Buddhist community, and create a framework to support Order members for generations to come.

I have recently come on board at the Abhayaratna Trust in the role of Supporter Care and Publicity, working alongside Taradakini in a small but lively team of two based in Scotland. I feel grateful to have this opportunity - a job that allows me to give something back to the Triratna community, and to the Order that sustains the Dharma and Sangha on which I thrive.
Taradakini and I have been having a lot of fun over the past two weeks...
‘The whole sense that Sangharakshita gave me of the Order was of something through which we were deeply involved with one another’s lives, were really standing shoulder to shoulder with one another, caring for one another not just spiritually but on all levels, and that’s really stayed with me. That spirit is still alive in the Order today, and I feel that The Abhayaratna Trust is one way we can really express it.’
