Founded in 2008, the Abhayaratna Trust supports Order members around the world who are experiencing financial hardship. Over nine years we have been helping an increasing number to maintain their Dharma practice and sangha connections, as well as assisting with urgent living costs. We expect this number to continue to grow in the coming years.

Now we are looking for an Order member to enable the further development of the work of the Trust and lead the team in the effective pursuit...

Writing a Will Part 4: DIY Wills vs. Using a Solicitor

Wed, 2 Nov, 2016 - 13:43

The cost of making a will can be off-putting. Writing your own will may be an appealing option; however it is generally advised against, as any mistakes can cause confusion and be costly down the line.

If your will is very straightforward (e.g.  if you are married and simply want to leave everything to your partner) then you might wish to look into the option of writing it yourself. There are plenty of templates available for writing your own will.

Another option might be...

Writing a Will Part 3: Naming your Executors

Fri, 28 Oct, 2016 - 01:38

Yesterday I asked my brother, ‘Will you be an executor of my will?’ He seemed surprised but agreed. My brother is a solicitor and I’m confident that he will manage all the necessary paper work and legal issues effectively.

‘Why not me?’ asks my mum with curiosity. It opens up a discussion about the reality that when I die, my mum will most likely already be dead, or in the event that I was to die before her, dealing with the practicalities...

Writing a Will Part 2: Making bequests

Tue, 25 Oct, 2016 - 13:37

Property: I hope to soon be the proud co-owner of a flat, so my partner will be the beneficiary of my share of our jointly owned property. If you are co-habiting it is important to have a valid will in place as cohabitees will not automatically have rights. It is a good idea to talk to your solicitor about any complicating circumstances regarding what you would like to happen to your property when you die – for example if you...

Writing a Will: The Time is Now

Wed, 12 Oct, 2016 - 15:25

But I’m only 29. I don’t have anything that amounts to much value. I can put it off another few years.

It’s easy to put off writing a will.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who has some resistance to doing it, and many excuses to back my case.

And then last week my great uncle died. A friend of mine attended the funeral of a family member younger than she is. While reading about Keats I learnt he died at only 25...
