A talk by Subhuti on the work of the great Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who dedicated his life to the welfare of his people. Subhuti’s general theme is ‘absorbing influences’, and no one is a more enduring influence on popular contemporary Buddhism in the East than the subject of this talk. Dr. Ambedkar embraced the Buddha’s Dhamma as an integral part of his efforts to emancipate the Dalit (ex-Untouchable) community from the shackles of caste oppression. His efforts are increasingly celebrated both in the West and in India, where his inspiration continues to encourage people to take up the Buddha’s teachings as part of a new life aimed squarely at freedom.
Talk given at the Western Buddhist Order Convention, 2005
